there is no correlation between how early a person goes and them being on the DL. That can happen to any player, at any time. Which is why there is merit to going when you know you can get paid and get it guaranteed.
And yes, the very point of reaching free agency a year earlier is why there is merit to going a year early. If Jontay goes to a team that puts him in a G league affiliate, he'll be signed to a two-way contract, which is still guaranteed if he's a 1st round pick.
This isn't a black and white decision here. Those saying it's dumb to leave early for money reasons aren't seeing the whole picture, which is that there is equal if not more of a reason to go as early as you can get a guaranteed contract to lengthen the amount of earnings years and get to that free agent status faster.
