A really great pitcher would turn this into a top 20 team. Not a top 8 team, but a top 15-20 type team. That's the nature of college softball. You look at the teams ranked roughly 15-25 and there isn't much there that scares me. There is a big drop off after the best 12-14 teams IMO.
But it concerns me that that pitcher is not on the team now. We have no pitchers in the next class, since Danielle Williams backed out of her verbal commitment after the turmoil here and signed with Northwestern. And the supposed savior in last years class, Conrad, was a bust. Rice shows good promise, has had a great last month, after a slow start. She could turn out to be really, really good, if she keeps improving, masters 2-3 more pitches, and gets in better shape and improves her stamina. Or, she could turn out to be just good. Even with her recent successes, she ranks 47th in the SEC in ERA. 47th.
So here we are begging and borrowing and trying to lure transfers in order to become nationally relevant again. Our best pitcher last year was a transfer. Norman is a transfer, but isn't anything special. She ranks 45th in the SEC in ERA. EE was so desperate for pitching help that he brought in 2 transfers this year, from NAIA and D2, and they have both been busts. Yes, a great grad transfer (there really aren't that many around) could plug a hole for one year. But then what?
We need to start recruiting one high quality pitcher in every recruiting class, and keeping them here for all 4 years, in order to build a deep and talented pitching staff to get us back to the top 10-12 in the nation status we used to have. This crap shoot of hoping transfers can stop the bleeding is not the way to go.
