Born and raised black St. Louisan. My parents were from the south and never attended college. I gained an interest in Mizzou sports around 1977. The main reason, probably because of the black and gold uniforms. I enrolled at Mizzou in 1981 but did not attend, went the JC route instead. As a fan, not athlete, Mizz does not promote itself as the flagship state college to attend or play for. There are no commercials, no coaches, players or Truman the Tiger at children's hospitals. Mizz has to grow its fan base in the St. Louis area by promoting its brand heavily and not just rely on being the flagship school in the state, especially when the football team has a good run.
As for STL wanting to be like Chicago, I'm trying to figure out where this inference comes from. As a lifelong St. Louisan, I have never heard anyone black or white stating they wanted to be like Chicago. If anything, St. Louis has gone out of its way to NOT be like Chicago. You do realize at one time, St. Louis had a larger population than Chicago. St. Louis was the hub of the Midwest. Chicago grew while St. Louis remained largely stagnant. There are no Michigan Aves in St. Louis. St. Louis is a southern city and has never pretended to be northern in any shape or form.
