best overall method IMO is a lifestyle change. Crash fad diets are just that. You will eventually get sick of it and go right back to where you were.
Each person is different but I have switched from running to a lot more weight training. Did this about 2 years ago and noticed results immediately. Also, we eat fairly healthy during the week and cheat a little on the weekends. Like I said different things work for different people, but I have never been able to maintain a "diet".
