The bottom line criteria is whether or not the person is reasonably perceived to be a viable threat to the person who uses deadly force as self defense.
How they got to that point is generally not an issue.
As a for instance:
If someone came up to you to complain that your kids are playing in his yard and trampled some flowers in his flower bed, is that a reasonable reason for you to kill him? I think we can all agree that that is not the case. If on the other hand he threatens to kill them if he sees them do it again, the threat level has escalated significantly. If you see him come out later with something that looks like a gun and seems to be ready to shoot one of your kids running across his lawn to pick up an errant baseball would it be unreasonable for you to shoot him? If so, does it really matter that originally he had a reasonably legitimate complaint? Killing someone because he wants your kids to stay out of his yard is pretty absurd, of course. Killing him because he is a legitimate threat to your child's life is a different matter completely.
