The guys we're losing (at least the ones that hurt the most) are typically leaving for programs with much better long-term records of success.
Keeping guys like Trout at home isn't going to happen with any regularity until we start winning with regularity. Pinkel just barely got to that point, and it took more than a decade. That was undone with just a few bad years.
As for whether it matters ... Maclin is mentioned quite a bit more here than Alexander. One came from St. Louis. The other from a small town in Texas. Both were All-Americans a couple years apart. No doubt in my mind that Maclin's local status is part of that. He had a built-in fan base before he ever suited up.
