CTE is apparently caused by a particular protein produced by the brain being released and accumulating in the brain's communication passageways. It's a process very similar to Alzheimer's, but a different protein.
The research suggests this particular protein is released when (1) the brain moves in a particular direction and comes to an abrupt stop or makes an abrupt change of direction and (2) when the brain rotates on the brain stem.
A concussion is brain trauma that produces certain symptoms. Concussion level brain trauma is not required to trigger the release of the particular protein. Non concussion events can casue the release of the protein.
Football produces far more of these events than any other sport, i.e. the involvment of virtually all of the players in blocking, tackling, avoiding a block, etc on virtually every play.
If one looks at just concussions, there are far more in football than in soccer. If you look at brain trauma that can cause the release of the guilty protein, football has overwhelmingly more than any other sport, including soccer.
If you look at the number of former players sufferring CTE, football players are about 50% more likely to suffer CTE than the general population. Soccer players show no particular greater proclivity to suffering CTE than the general population.
