college sports are about two things

1) publicity to encourage enrollment to the school.
2) publicity to encourage alumni donations to the school.

Take away football and universities like Alabama and Nebraska and, let's face it, Mizzou, don't have all that much to sell to encourage #'s 1 and 2.

Then suddenly kids are deciding which schools to go to based on merit, and alums are giving money if they feel inspired by the educational accomplishments of the school.

We can't have that.
