The man was a paranoid schizophrenic. Paranoids are typically very intelligent, secretive-private, and of course paranoid. Son of Sam got his command to kill from a dog, his delusion told him. This man was psychotic, not rational, so rational brains are perplexed. Again, he was a Comanche ( enemy to all). To be colloquial, he was crazy. Sometimes, you just have to look at the actions.

Now what made his brain react so abnormally? Drugs, a stroke, bad innate chemistry? He knew in his own mind what he was doing. He calculated it. Because of his psychosis, this hasn't and won't make sense to those considered normal.
