Two other additional considerations:

1. Some of the big schools in other states (i.e. Illinois) had finally gotten tired of us raiding their states for students and are responding with aggressive recruiting efforts of their own.

2. The number of college-bound high school students in Missouri and other nearby states is decreasing, while the competition to get them is ramping up.
