was hell bent on capitalizing on the national media frenzy that had started to the fullest extent.
If you listen to the quotes by J'Mon and other players at the time, they had bought into the line of stuff that CS1950 had been feeding them. I would have loved if the players had done the peace talks/public statement you describe, but even if they had, I don't think it would have quelled the media frenzy because CS1950 was starting to get reinforcement nationally from all the professional BLM agitators. That wing wanted it to be Ferguson 2.0. They were ready.
DeRay McKesson, the guy who had taught a class in defense of looting at Yale, had already arrived in CoMo. How was that really going to go if the Wolfe standoff had been allowed to linger? We've seen their M.O. elsewhere including Ferguson. They love that kinda stuff and the media firestorm it creates.
Each day that passed, the odds of there not being one stupid confrontation between someone somewhere that resulted in violence diminshed. And that would have been true disaster. As bad a PR image as we all think it is to see a Mizzou professor pointing and saying they "need some muscle," it's nothing compared to the image of the Columns standing amidst another raging inferno for the second time in their history. Yes, there are lots of alternative futures, but at minimum I will always be happy we got out of that situation without riots, looting or burning buildings in CoMo. That would have been heartbreaking to see and the enrollment truly would have never recovered.
