(In theory) The republic is a confederacy of individual nations that formed a voluntary compact. Some of those nations withdrew and Lincoln waged war against them, launching a mass murder campaign to prevent their leaving. So much for the voluntary compact among nations. Now it's more like the Soviet Republic

Lincoln and Sherman on the other hand.
