Why have you been saying we've 'only won one national title in the last 30 years' for the last five years, DD?
And as your institution prepares to erect a statue to honor the coaching legacy of Norm Stewart, educate me as to how 'only one national title in 30 years' is so worthy of derision? If you are going to erect a statue to honor the record of a coach who, in 32 years, never won a single NC ... never took a team to single Final Four ... had eight first round losses in the NCAA Tournament ... and had a 12-16 record in NCAA Tournament play (which meant that in HALF of his tenure, his teams weren't judged good enough to be invited to play in said Tournament) ... what would one national title and two FF's be worthy of in Columbia? Something on the order of the Gateway Arch?
And ,again, if your program had been good enough to win the national title in 1990, 2004 and 2015, it, too, would not have been able to defend it/them because of the subsequent probations it was given. Correct? Are you, in retrospect glad/relieved that your teams were not good enough to win the title those seasons. Could you explain to a dumb beaker like me the ethical difference between not being to defend a national title in college basketball because your program was put on probation the following year (like 1988) and not being able to defend a first round loss to a 14-seed in college basketball because your program was put on probation the following year (like 1990)?
Thank you!
