would know that conference tournament championships, while sometimes referred to simply as "conference championships", are never referred to as "conference titles".

When people in CBB talk about a "conference title" they are always referring to the regular-season title winner. In fact, many of them are referring to the regular-season title winner when they say "conference champion" but I've seen that term used for the conference tournament champion as well.
