He's got the Mavericks and got an application for the expansion, he just didn't return it.
The only thing stopping Kansas City from having an AHL team (or an NHL team for that matter) is the city preferring that the Sprint Center operate 100% in the black and knowing they'd have to give up 50-60 nights a year to have a team.
Hockey teams need arena revenue to survive and Kansas City needs all the arena revenue to operate a profitable arena. That's all there is to it.
The Blues were definitely sniffing KC for the AHL team, they've just got no way to do it unless they keep it in Independence at that little arena out there.
Like I said, anyone could have seen it coming and I'm surprised the Blues didn't.
If the city had a little leeway in their operation of Sprint Center either by getting move revenue through events or allowing it to have some level of financial loss annually, the Scouts (or whatever they'd be called) would likely already be playing.
