He had 8 teams finish 2nd or 3rd that didn't make the tournament prior to it going to the 64 team format. He made the tournament 16 times. In today's format he would have added 50% more appearances. If nothing else, His teams would have had more tournament experience year to year, and may have broken through or even got a lucky draw. Getting 50% more chances is huge. The point is that you can't compare his tenure to somebody in today's environment. Hell, today's scholarship limits make the playing field that much more even than it was back then. Building a program from a 3 win team to what he created was that much more difficult back then.
