Nancy Fahey, who won five Division III national championships at Washington University in 31 seasons, has been hired as the next women's basketball coach at Illinois.
Illinois athletics director Josh Whitman, formerly at Washington University, made the announcement on Twitter, posting a photo of himself and Fahey early Wednesday afternoon and calling her "one of the best to ever wear a whistle."
Whitman was at Washington University for two years, during which time he made Fahey an assistant athletics director.
"Washington University will forever hold a special place in my heart," Fahey said in a statement. "The reason has been the people: the administration, supporters, colleagues and assistant coaches. They are truly special people. To the players that have been part of our program since the beginning to now, I want to say thank you. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to share some wins, championships and of course a few losses along the way. The incredible feelings I have of being part of the Bear family will never change. It is impossible to express how much the players have meant to me."
Fahey has a career record of 737-133 and took the Bears to 10 Final Fours. She reached 600 wins faster than any women's basketball coach in NCAA history.
The Bears won four consecutive national titles from 1998 to 2001 and added a fifth in 2010. They were runner-up in 1994, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
They reached the Elite Eight this season and finished ranked No. 6, marking the 20th year the Bears were in the final national top 10.
