He was making under $150k at MU and that was after a lifetime working in non-profit ministry related professions and free lancing voice work.

UW offered him a significant raise including some very unusual provisions, including air vouchers, housing allowance. My understanding is they had debt and do not want to be reliant on their kids success.

While Porter's employment at UW as tied to Romar, he'd still be prudent to cut ties in such a way that doesn't expose him and his family to financial hardship or frankly for a single penny less than what he's owed under his contract.
