that he could have succeeded, if he had brought the right things to the table. He didn't, and then after that first year it was a lost cause regardless because we lost all the inherited assets and potential momentum.
It was always going to be an extremely risky hire with very little high end payoff and a strong probability of not working out. There is a reason why no other program had ever hired such an unqualified candidate and why he wouldn't have been a realistic candidate for even minimal consideration at any other job opening. It just blew up in our face much worse than I think even the most pessimistic could have possibly imagined.
