My thought.

Waiting until the end of the year has NO benefit whatsoever.

Firing him now and having Shields take over on an interim basis, might ignite the fanbase, just a little, in a positive way.

Also, even though coaches know it's inevitable that KA will be let go, at least they will know it's 100% certainty and will be make some inquiries through their agent about the job. Brings in more potential candidates.
