line tournament team, mediocre is not the correct term to describe that team. At 46 RPI now, they are not that far from being a bubble team. 40 would probably be a bubble team. In almost every year, #35 gets in. It's very rare, and not sure 35 has missed since going to the +4 games. There are 32 automatics, leaving 28 and 8 play in teams. Of the 32 automatics, 7 are shoe ins from the major conferences and Gonzaga/St. Mary's, both in the top 25. Plus Cincinnati would have to have a major melt down to not be in.
Of the 45 currently ahead of them, 32 are from major conferences, leaving 13 not from the big 6 conferences vying for at large bids, but most of them should get automatics. Essentially you're looking at a current bubble team, not a need to do more to become a bubble team. They need to do more to stay a bubble team.
So no, I do not accept your reasoning as consistent with what happens at selection time.
