improvement. The season was lost the day we lost to North Carolina Central, but this is a young roster that could still move forward with the right new coach.
It was encouraging to see a breakout performance from Puryear. He is a building block for next year. It was nice to see VanLeer knock down a few threes, too, and I think Phillips will get more consistent as he matures.
As a team, sure, this will go down as perhaps the worst season in program history. I cannot recall a worse start to league play (even Kim Anderson himself won at least one early SEC game in each of his first two years) since Mike Anderson's first year, when we started 0-4 in the Big 12. I would imagine 0-6 is probably worse than any start we've had in a half-century.
But although the season is lost, the program isn't. This roster is still young enough that, if mixed with a really good head coach and some sparkplug newcomers, we could pull off a quick turnaround.
