1) we don't have a reputation for producing consistently winning programs
2) we have never had coaches with exceptional sales skills to sell athletes on their programs
3) we haven't had strong support from state government
4) we have had weak university administration
We were a powerhouse during the 12 years (1958-70) that Dan Devine was our coach because he was an excellent recruiter as well as coach. The result back then was a program that was recognized nationally, gained strong support statewide and from the university. WINNING tends to do that. Unfortunately in the decades since we have been less than stellar on the field and that now defines our reputation.
