College football teams were established long before pro football came to the bigger states in the south and also to Louisiana. Alabama, Mississppi and South Carolina have no pro sport teams. Probably never will. One of the reasons why OU and NU led football in the B8. Look at the way Sooner basketball support has fallen off in OKC after the arrival of the Thunder. Its all about competition.
