Yeah, he needed someone who could get him players quickly. Needed two recruiters and Shields to start. After his first year and the transfers after that year the perception was so bad that it was unrecoverable.

Letting him bring Loos at the beginning over forcing him to take another recruiter seems like a big mistake, in retrospect.

Still, a 60 year old white guy with negative charisma seems unlikely to succeed at recruiting without a big time resume. Even Bobby knight couldn't get players at Texas tech.
