I think we should have taken all ground troops out of the ME several years ago (along with the many billions we've sent various people, literally, which I guarantee has ended up in personal acc'ts). We owe no one ANYTHING over there, unless maybe natives who helped us and now are in danger because of it. But only they can solve their own (islam) problems.
As to who dominates the ME, we can't and don't need to, so long as we have access to the one thing we need from there. Oil. And no, achieving our total energy independence is IMO extremely shortsighted, at least in the forseeable future, and surely impossible anyway.
Obama is arrogant, yet immature, unknowledgeable of so much, is a muslim sympathizer and has no affinity for the US. In fact, is surely the opposite of that.
