The case you are making for the large number of
pro teams in the state causing the fanbase to be small and not college sports focused through generations I totally agree with. Where I disagree with you is "the passion. "
It's never been the the kind of fanatical "sellout against Jackson State" kind of passion you have at other, even mid-majors like Witchita State. It was a lot of butt soft bandwagon support - ill bet even a large percentage of the most passionate posters on here haven't been to a game in years. That's why Alden's blunders were so critical - it was a house of cards that collapsed and may never be "rebuilt" because the foundation was never really solid
