he had recognized his own limitations, assessed the odd singularity of a guy in his position being offered such a role, and contemplated the impact on the program if he accepted such an offer. Seems improbable it didn't occur to him that he would be the first person in like 30 years to make such an leap and why nobody had ever done it before, at least to the degree he would have contemplated if he was prepared and well suited for the role.
