I have a learning disabled son. He will be under my care for the rest of my life. We had more children to care for him when we're gone.
I have many friends that have to deal with this.
One has an extremely retarded daughter. She's now an adult and wears diapers, mutters words over and over again, and you look at her and there is no light in her eyes.
Dave found out after the fact, his daughter was genetically defected. Also came to quickly realize Kathy would be with him the rest of his life. And soon followed my example of having more kids for when he's gone.
Dave also found out pregnancy testing would show if the fetus would be retarded. He told me straight up, if retardation was detected they would abort.
Fortunately, none of the next two pregnancies were problems, and she now has two brothers.
I can't fault them if they had an abortion. Why? Because he's trying to care for his retarded daughter with a strong supportive family.
I have lots of challenges with an MMR son. Mine are nothing compared to his. Personally I don't know what I'd do (I said I'm personally against it). But I cannot fault someone else's decision when I know it's 100X harder.
You could argue to adopt, but the dirty little secret is many even most adopted kids have been damaged. It's why they are available. That's how I got my MMR son.
