Actually, it IS black and white.
The fact is that every direct abortion is the deliberate, often brutal slaughter of an innocent human being.
That is not some religious or philosophical opinion, but a scientific fact. (1)
I would also note that there are really four possibilities with regards to abortion:
1. The fetus is a human being and we know it.
2. The fetus is a human being and we don't know whether it is a human being or not.
3. The fetus is NOT a human being but we don't know whether it is a human being or not.
4. The fetus is NOT a human being and we know for certain that he or she is not human.
Under common law deliberately killing some being is a crime in all but the 4th circumstance. If a hunter saw some bushes moving in the low light of dawn and he shot the form moving in the bushes he would be guilty of murder in situations analogous to item #1 above. He knew it was a human but he killed it anyway.
In situation #2 above he would be guilty of manslaughter.
Even in situation #3 he would be guilty of reckless endangerment.
ONLY in situation #4 would he be free of guilt.
With respect to abortion, however, we are clearly dealing with situation #1 if science is to be believed. The scientists/doctors who study the beginning of life are embryologists, and they have known unequivocally for close to a century that a human being comes into existence at conception.
