We don't know what happened.
The Judas story builds more and more robustness does it not in later of the Synoptic Gospels, ones in which anti-Semitism takes on greater prevalence. The Gospel of Judas, condemned by the Church but allowed some relevance by others reveals a different story. I have looked at some oft he Gnostic Gospels and find it impossible to rely solely on those given the OK 400 years later by the "Church", but that is a different tale. I would doubt that Iscariot was a "money grubber". He was special, we know that. Perhaps he was tight with the Teacher. How did a Tax Collector get in with the fishermen and laborers?
