The age of consent is 16 in Oklahoma so the boyfriend was committing no crime. In fact, they were just kissing according to the story.

If the mother had been aware that this had been going on and had known the man and warned her daughter to stop seeing him or she would kill him, and then proceeded to try and do so the next day, that could be a big legal problem for her methinks.
