When you've got a political party using identity politics that implicitly blames the problems of declining economic prospects for blue collar white men on illegals, then I don't see the wisdom in blacks heading in that direction.
The real issue for low skilled white, black, and Latino workers is the skills gap brought about by technology. Instead of addressing that, the GOP is only interested in divisive rhetoric that ensures their base will show up at the polls.
Of course, their strategy got blown up by Trump who's quick to elevate conversations that used to be restricted to the dining room table to mainstream media.
If the racism is latent and coded properly, then whites are comfortable going in that direction. However when it's explicit to the point that Trump has to exaggerate racial stereotypes and tweet white supremacists, then it becomes problematic.
If Hillary Clinton wasn't exposed as an inept candidate with obvious ethical flaws and questionable instincts, this would be a cakewalk and still could be.
