I know, all the terrible players around him sucked and dropped his passes or missed open shots.

In reality other than his shot attempts he was never really dictating anything with his court time. His passes were just moving the ball around the perimeter and his role in the offense was standing stationary at various points in on the arc. He was being asked to specifically play the role of the guy who stretches the defense and wasn't well suited for that.
