Interested to see the box score in terms of how his points were accumulated even if we won't have a shot chart.
After watching him play, I think knockdown shooter is a weird characterization to try and put on VanLeer. Seems like as he gains experience and maturity his game will be more well rounded and not really confined to just shooting, and he doesn't appear to be like a Brian Grawer where if he gets an open look and misses it kind of surprises you.
I would forsee him evolving into more of a Jon McIntyre type of player (which is a very good and valuable college player):

The issue with VanLeer last year wasn't what he did or did not bring to the table. It was that during SEC play if not for a late injury he would have finished 5th on the team in minutes played. As a freshman he just puts no pressure on defenses.
Him being a below avg defender aside... he doesn't create for others either via the dribble or the pass, he doesn't rebound, he doesn't help break pressure, he doesn't set picks or move off the ball, he doesn't get to the line. He basically stands stationary for possessions and either continues to move the ball around the perimeter or shots at 21%. We essentially played 4 on 5 when he was out there, and had to compensate for him defensively.
Which is fine, he shouldn't be expected to be much more than that at this point. Its not a critique of his game, its an observation of the absurdity of the role he is being put in. Even the fact that he had 9 turnovers in SEC play is rather amazing because it should be very hard for a player doing the things that he does to even be put in a situation where they turn the ball over.
He will end up being a good contributor I suspect, he was just miscast last season and overexposed.
