Middle & Lower Tier P5 Schools

Why are middle and lower tier P5 schools obsessed with being in a conference that more or less confirms their middle or lower tier status? I would argue that Boise St., TCU in the MWC, Louisville in the old Metro, Gonzaga in their league, Wichita St. In the Valley, etc., enjoy/enjoyed higher profiles than the vast collection of Washington General schools that populate the middle and lower tiers of the P5.
I guess I would rather be a big fish in a little pond, that garners more pub and wins big than be a Wash General that collects a big check but remains largely an irrelevant consideration in sports.
Conference affiliation obsession just doesn't do that much for me if it is more or less a sentence to be the play thing of the truly elite P5 schools.
