The Violets had a legit program until the war years. As a matter of fact, Paul Christman wasn't recognized nationally until Mizzou beat NYU in NYC in 1939, and Grantland Rice, who gave ND's "Four Horsemen" their nickname, wrote an article about Pitchin' Paul.
Also keep in mind that Faurot didn't coach Mizzou during the war years. He was coaching at Iowa Navy Pre-Flight. His assistant HC, Chauncy Simpson, was Mizzou's coach.
Also, Iowa Navy Pre-Flight had some great college players coached by Don Faurot, with Bud Wilkinson and Jim Tatum as two of his assistant coaches.
