I wouldn't consider Faurot to be elite, except as an innovator and how he took the payouts along with the lumps, from scheduling tOSU every year, to pay off Memorial Stadium. Those are the two reasons why he has a statue in front of the stadium that contains the field named after him.
Innovation is the main reason why Don Faurot is in the College Football HOF, not necessarily for the performance of his teams. Faurot's Mizzou teams in the 50's sucked.
