It was about Virginia CRIMINALIZING interracial marriage and interracial sex and sentencing the Lovings to 1 year in prison.

The Court said that because Virginia's Racial Integrity Act used race as a basis to impose criminal culpability, the Equal Protection Clause required the Court to scrutinize strictly whether the Act was constitutional.

Anti interracial marriage laws remained on the books after the decision in several states... until 2000 when Alabam final abolished that law.

Had Virginia not CRIMINALIZED interracial marriage, Loving would not have been a case for SCOTUS to review.
