if like in the movie Diggstown, where a fighter takes on ten guys in the ring in 12 hours, if the first few are there to tire out and maybe injure the opponent, soften him up, until the big boys come at the end to finish him off.
Newsome is supporting the rioters and plssing on the cops and law enforcement. He is bringing out the tired socialist talking points about trummp's authoritarianism, tyranny and how he is fighting to save our democracy.

But the "big boys" don't exist in the socialist party.
