Thats kind of the classic cutting off your nose to spite your face. A great many of the technological, scientific, and medical innovations that our country has been at the forefront of have been reached through collaborations with university research (or flat out done by universities on their own). One of the reasons many of the brightest minds in the world come to this country is to study and do research at our universities. If we are ok with letting the world pass us by, then we should definitely stop the funding.
