Republican for conservative. This is not the case.

Liberal is willing to challenge predominant existing thought. Conservative values preservation of tradition more.

Some on the liberal side go off the deep end projecting untestable ideas (particularly in the social realm) as fact or what is right.

Some on the conservative side reject anything that conflicts with their beliefs (like evolution).

Political parties latch on to these differences to form voting blocks.
