Gates got Ronnie DeGray and Caleb Brown, who basically didn’t play and weren’t meaningful contributors. And he got Kobe Brown, who was a solid proven player on a terrible team the year before. It could be argued, and Kobe has stated as much, that Gates had to successfully recruit him or he would have left. Cuonzo left a total disaster
