had Rush signed out of high school before he retired, but this is far from true. He was leaning to UCLA before Quin was hired. Quin retained Rich Daly as a “special consultant” for a couple of months and he secured the commitment.
Early in Quin’s tenure, we was cited (by Roy Williams then the NCAA) for an impermissible conversation with Andre Iguodala in the hallway outside of Springfield (IL) Lanphier high school, then more notably, for allowing Rickey Paulding’s and Arthur Johnson’s parents to fly on a private jet. Quin responded that he “had always done these exact same things” as Duke’s primary recruiter and assistant coach” and had no idea these things might be violations.
Alden stepped in and forced him to recruit “by the books” and vetoed a number of his targets off the list. Kansas and Duke got a lot of them. Luol Deng was academically ineligible to be admitted to Missouri but okay for Duke. Brandon Rush was willing to walk-on at Mizzou with Kareem paying, but had not ever really attended any high school. Academic all Big-12 at ku after being admitted in late September.
Quin had plenty of issues, but Alden was his main one.
