There are subtypes due to evolution, depending on variations in the surface arrangements of two proteins.

Herd immunity does not happen due to evolution. The immune system build antibodies for the surface proteins that more rapidly evolve, not the “HA stalk” that has barely evolved.

It is why scientists are investigating how to get the immune system to target the “HA stalk” and this have a universal influenza vaccine.
