So far softball has thrashed ranked Duke and Baylor teams, played very tough against No. 5 ranked UCLA, and beaten very good Clemson and Liberty teams.
They also have laid some eggs in losing to inferior teams, and got thrashed by excellent Florida State and Oregon teams.
Their starting lineup has exactly two players who started in the same positions last year, so there are lots of newcomers.
They have played a very tough schedule, and by seasons end will undoubtedly have played one of the toughest schedules in the country. You could call their SEC schedule “brutal.”
In the past 4 years they have been to two SEC tournament championship games and 4 NCAA tournaments, had two top 8 seeds in the NCAA tourney, and been to two super regionals, both times going within one base hit of the Women’s College World Series.
Their sophomore and freshman classes were highly rated in recruiting circles, and they have several highly ranked recruits coming next fall, including a top ten hitter and a top ten pitcher.
So no, they are not “spiraling”. They are off to a tough, inconsistent start. They played very well the first weekend in Florida, good but not as good the second weekend in Florida, and poorly in 2 of the 5 games in California. They have lots of room for improvement, but the future looks bright.
