So, it's up to me decipher what he really meant when he says

He could have replied with something more along the lines of "Yeah, you are right they aren't "determined" by the rankings, but there is some perception that comes along with rankings". Instead when someone says they are not determined by rankings he goes with

Also, I am convinced that he actually believed it was 1 for 1 when he said it.
