It’s just that I’m not sure if Daly will thrive there. She has good fielding instincts (not great IMO), and a very strong and accurate arm, which are big pluses for playing SS.
But my specific concern is her range. At 3B she had to react quickly and move only a few feet in either direction to get to a ball (excepting of course a bunt or really slow roller). That’s not the case at SS where you need speed and need to range side to side and up and back far more than you do at 3B.
Does Daly have that range and speed for the SS position? All signs point to we are going to find out, and soon.
LA has some tough decisions to make. Her instinct is always to put a great fielding team out there, it’s one of her strengths. But there are enough questions and unknowns regarding our hitting and ability to put runs on the board that she may have to compromise a little on that. A number of returnees (Daly and Walker are just two, among with Dodge), really need to have comeback years at the plate. And we need to get solid hitting from several of the new players, freshmen Watkins, Hill and Uptegrove among them, plus the two transfers Ebbs and Sokoloski.
And our schedule isn’t going to allow for a great deal of on the job training. Going to be a fun, and really challenging year.
