I have no inside knowledge, but listening to Coach Anderson's comments in the interview, she mentioned the benefit of having four power bats in the infield (which would be Hays, Ebbs, Daly and Walker) plus giving freshmen infielders a chance to get adjusted to college ball. I know Bluetiger you commented that Uptegrove may have more offensive potential than Walker but time will tell on that.
Some of you have followed the team more closely than me but it seems like Coach Anderson has rarely played freshman in fielding positions a whole lot, Jenna Laird being one of the few exceptions (and maybe Honnold?). Am I correct about that? Obviously last year Walker and Hays split starts at first, but neither started the whole season.
Regarding the risk of moving Daley to shortstop, she is perhaps going by the fact that the shortstop will play a more critical defensive role than the third base fielder, and so would rather have more skill there than third base.
It will be interesting for sure to see how the positions sort out. Of course it may be different by mid-season compared to the start of the season.
