Interesting debate here.
First off, she won't be coaching any time soon. In an interview last year, she said that loves playing in the WNBA and thinks she can play for 10 more years. So if some of you are hoping or expecting that she'll replace RP, it probably isn't happening.
Can anyone name a former player who got a D-1 head coaching job without any coaching experience, and turned a program into a consistent winner? Cheryl Miller is the only one I can think of. She coached at USC (her alma mater) for two years, then coached in the WNBA but never got another D-1 coaching job.
I'd like to see if we can hire a better coach than we've had in the past. I'm not sure, given where the program is and the conference it plays in, that hiring someone with no coaching experience is what we need.
Then again, maybe MU needs to try something different. Sophie (if she would change her mind) would definitely be an out-of-the box hire. My only concern would be that she doesn't start for her WNBA team, so how many girls outside of Columbia, or even Missouri, are familiar with her?
